President's Message...

Making a Difference

The first month of 2019 is already behind us. I sincerely hope your new year is off to a good start. For many, January is a time to refocus on what we expect in the upcoming year; a time to reflect on the previous year, the ups, the downs, the wins and the losses, and a time to plan how we will make a difference in the world. It is also a time to chart out our goals for the upcoming year. Many people will begin by filling in their calendar with seminars, office events and even vacation time. I personally do this. Some are easy like Dynamic Essentials which I have been attending for over 25 years. It is the foundation upon which my professional and even personal life is built so I always put those in first.  Our next DE is a one day intensive in Daytona on February 23rd. It will include tours of Palmer FL campus as well. The next full DE is April 25-28 in beautiful Sarasota FL. Check out www.lifede.com for more info and to register. 

Next, I put in the GCC events that I will be attending. The 2019 TIC Tour is called Making a Difference! 2018 was a great year for the GCC and we have planned 2019 to be even better. Our first event will be the 7th Annual Savannah CE Express. We're excited to expand this year to a larger vennue while still enjoying the Historic District. And of course we have events planned for Philosophy, CA training, and social gatherings. Be sure to visit www.georgiachiropractic.org often to get the latest info on our upcoming events.

The next items I schedule are my vacations. Cancun, Mexico is our vacation spot of choice and we try to get there 4 times per year.  Work hard...Play hard! If you're planning to make a difference in 2019, be sure to plan time for recreation and relaxation.

Unfortunately this new year has also brought two hard losses to the GCC/DE family.  We are saddened by the passing of longtime GCC member and past board member, Dr. Tim Langley on January 16 after a brief illness.  We have created the Dr. Tim Langley Memorial Scholarship Fund to perpetuate his legacy to deserving Chiropractic students.  To donate please visit https://www.gofundme.com/tim-langley-scholarship-fund or visit the scholarship campaign page at www.georgiachiropractic.org for more info.

Yesterday we said our final goodbyes to Ms Melba Hughes, longtime director of Dynamic Essentials who passed away on January 31 after a bought with cancer. Ms Melba was like a second mother to many in chiropractic. She will be greatly missed.

Lastly, I would like to extend an invitation to anyone whose office is not running the way they’d like it to, please reach out directly to me, or any of our GCC board members. We would be more than happy to help you reach your goals in practice and make a difference in your community. We believe every chiropractor should be wildly successful in whatever practice model they see fit to practice in.

GCC Dr Tim Langley Memorial Chiropractic Scholarship Fund

Dr Tim Langley of Marietta, Georgia passed away on January 16 after a long and quiet battle—he always had a warm smile and positive outlook, he never showed us his pain. He was more concerned with caring for others. Dr Tim was our colleague, long time GCC member, recent Board Member and Legislative Chairperson, and our Chiropractic Brother; and among all these good works and others, he was always a willing mentor to any chiropractic student who came his way; taking them under his wing, guiding and teaching them in the ways of Dr. Sid Williams and leading them on the path of principled chiropractic.  Therefore, in his honor and with his family's blessing, the Georgia Council of Chiropractic is raising funds to establish the GCC Tim Langley Memorial Chiropractic Scholarship Fund. 

We commit to using this scholarship to continue helping students in a manner that would make Dr Tim proud.  All funds donated will go to chiropractic student scholarships. Please give as much as your heart leads you to give; our goal of $25,000 will establish the fund in perpetuity, allowing Dr Tim's legacy to impact many generations of future chiropractors.

Legislative Committee Update...

 Chiropractic Day at the Capitol 2019  

You are invited to Chiropractic Day at the Capitol 2019 with our GCC leaders and legislative committee on Thursday, February 14, along with leaders of other chiropractic groups in Georgia. Please join us for any or all of the follwoing activities:

Support House Bill 9, Lien Laws for Chiropractic Practices

The GCC Legislative Committee encourages all members and non-members to participate in the Chiropractic Day event as Georgia's chiropractic profession gathers in unity to support House Bill 9 sponsored by Rep. Karen Mathiak, DC, of Georgia's 73rd District.  You can learn more about House Bill 9 here. 

Lien Laws are something you all have asked about over the years, and we are pleased to work along side Dr. Karen Mathiak, as well as the GCA, in support of this Bill. We ask that you not only attend the Chiropractic Day at the Capitol, but also INVITE YOUR LEGISLATORS.  Invite them to the update on the Opioid Crisis, make an appointment to see them mid morning, and invite them to the luncheon.

It has always been a part of the GCC mission to educate legislators to the benefits of chiropractic for a healthier Georgia and we cannot do it without you. See you at the Capitol and don't forget to RSVP.

GCC Attends 2019 Wild Hog Supper

A tradition started years ago, and an annual event that Georgia politicos look forward to year after year, the Wild Hog Supper is hosted by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. It truly marks the beginning of the Georgia legislative session and is always held on the Sunday before the Monday of the opening day. It is an event the Georgia Council of Chiropractic has attended for the last 20+ years and serves as a great opportunity to meet and greet with many of our legislative friends.

This year under the leadership of our president, Dr. Brian Lieberman, we had the opportunity to speak with Georgia's new Governor, Brian Kemp, and numerous legislators who been great friends to the GCC for many years. It is always a pleasure to hear firsthand what is coming up in the halls of the capitol. 

Along with Dr. Lieberman, other attendees from GCC included Legislative Committee co-chairs, Drs. Norm Colby, Brad Pizza and Awais Butt, as well as Dr. Cathy Wendland Colby, Rachel Lieberman, Tabby Butt, Sandy Pizza. Life University students, Nikolai Young, Paulina Kaminski, Rich Moriarty, and Vincent Sclafani also joined us to see firsthand how politics works in Georgia.

The annual Wild Hog Supper is an important political event because we get to voice our concerns in a one on one setting, which is very important before the legislative session commences.  Please plan to be with us next year if you have the opportunity. It’s a wonderful time filled with good fun and fellowship. Extending Our Condolences...

Remembering Melba Hughes

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Melba Hughes, long time office manager of Dynamic Essentials and well known by many GCC members because of her role at DE and the closeness of the two organizations both founded by Dr. Sid. Ms. Melba passed away peacefully on January 31 after a bout with cancer.  

Melba first came to work for Drs. Sid and Nell Williams in 1966 at Si-Nel Publishing Company. Over the years she wore many hats including salesperson, secretary, bookkeeper, event coordinator, and office manager; but ultimately landed at the Dynamic Essentials meeting which combined all of her previous job talents into one. As she was the first face you would see on arriving at DE, she was known and loved by so many in the chiropractic profession over the decades. She loved music, and sports, particularly the Falcons and the Braves. She loved DE, Chiropractic, and the Williams Family. Her depth of historical knowledge about Dr. Sid and her quick witted personality will be greatly missed for years to come.

GCC Past Presidents, Drs Steve and Claire Welsh are currently serving as ICA Vice President, and ICA Southern Regional Director, respectively.  Two-time GCC Past President, Dr Brad Pizza, and current GCC President, Dr Brian Lieberman, are currently representing Georgia on the ICA Representative Assembly, and numerous other past GCC leaders have served in ICA positions as well. The GCC is proud to be Georgia's ICA state affiliate organization and we cannot stress enough that while your membership with GCC protects the profession at the state level, your membership in in the ICA is essential to protecting the profession at the national and international level.
