President's Message...

It's Convention Time Again!!!

How can it already be time for GCC’s 38th Annual Convention???  What a whirlwind this past year has been with a flurry of activity here socially, practically and politically.  We have been hard at work for all Chiropractors and patients, continuing the pushfor everyone's  right to receive the highest level of Chiropractic care regardless of the reason for seeking that care. Newborns, toddlers, teens, adults, athletes and seniors ALL deserve the freedom to be checked for subluxation and adjusted if necessary regardless of their symptoms or lack of symptoms!

It’s an exciting time to be a Chiropractor and an even more exciting time to be a GCC CHIRO!  Wow, there has been so much going on in our organization that I’m not sure where to begin.

Let’s recap the summer first.  From an Atlanta United game, to our Atlanta Summer CE Express, to our 1st Annual Chiro Cornhole and our 8th Annual Augusta CE, Summer went by in a flash. Then fall hit and we traveled to Warner Robins for our annual South GA CE Express, next was Philosophy in Practice with Dr. Rob Schiffman, and then the highlight of the year so far, the amazing 2nd Annual GCC ChiroCup Golf tournament presented by Allegiance Imaging and Radiology.

This year's golf tournament was again a huge success with over 100 golfers coming out to raise money for opioid awareness programs such as The Davis Direction Foundation.  The mission of the Davis Direction Foundation is to fight addiction and fuel recovery while serving as a role model in the community in order to become a national resource for opioid/heroin addiction awareness and change. GCC was an exhibitor at their national conference in September and we are proud to be a part of their mission while bringing awareness of how chiropractic can play a role in successful recoveries as well as preventing addiction in the first place.

On a political front, we have been working behind the scenes on the national Medicare reform issue. The GCC has taken a vocal OPPOSITION position to the ACA’s Medicare bill, as it would remove subluxation language along with other serious issues. Chiropractic Medicare reform is an extremely important legislative issue as there haven't been real changes in decades, and likely won’t be again anytime soon if a change is made.  The GCC will support legislation that includes exams and radiographs added as paid services but would not be in favor of a seemingly open ended reimbursement model. Be sure to check future issues of the Major Premise for updates.

And now it's time for our 38th Annual Convention and Expo. This year we will again be at the Sonesta Gwinnett Place Hotel and Conference Center, and we're excited to be in November this year so you can get your credits for the year taken care of BEFORE the Holidays!!!  We've got a great line up of speakers bringing useful content, several new exhibitors, and even a Saturday Night Disco Party!  Plus, back by popular demand, we'll have a Tex-Mex fiesta lunch on Saturday and our Sunday Luncheon sponsored by Legally Mine. It's going to be an exciting weekend packed full of food, friends, fun and chiropractic! I hope you will join us to celebrate!!!

Until next time, Stay Principled My Friends.

Love to all,

Brian Lieberman, DC, FICA, ChiropracTOR
President, Georgia Council of Chiropractic

THANK YOU 2019 ChiroCup Sponsors and Players

GCC Dr Tim Langley Memorial Chiropractic Scholarship

******CALLING ALL DE / GCC / PRINCIPLED STUDENTS!******
****ENTER TODAY for your chance to be awarded the 2019 G.C.C. TIM LANGLEY MEMORIAL CHIROPRACTIC SCHOLARSHIP in the amount of $1000.00!!!******

What is the GCC Tim Langley Memorial Chiropractic Scholarship? It is a D.C. student scholarship that is awarded at least one time per year to an exceptional student who exhibits many of the qualities that Dr. Tim Langley thought to be important for all students to possess. Those qualities include, but are not limited to:
-Active participation in organizations such as the GCC (or equivalent state association), Dynamic Essentials, the ICA, and other organizations that support and protect the principles of ChiropracTIC!
-A dedication and desire to serve their future communities through pure, unadulterated principled Chiropractic care.
-A dedication to learning, in great detail, the principles of chiropractic.
-A strong ability to communicate chiropractic through a simple and easily understood message.

How to be considered for the 2019 GCC Tim Langley Memorial Chiropractic Scholarship?
1. produce TWO simple videos. - The first: a brief introduction of who you are, where you attend chiropractic school, what quarter/trimester you are, how you are involved in principled chiropractic inside/outside of school and why you feel you qualify to be awarded the 2019 Tim Langley Scholarship. - The Second: a short video that explains chiropractic, in layman's terms, as if you were speaking to a new or potential patient in your future office.
2. Both videos should be concise (2 minutes or less each) and easily understood.
3. Email both videos to info@georgiachiropractic.org

How will the winner be determined? The winner will be determined based solely on the quality of the content of the videos you submit. Each video will be examined by each member of the GCC scholarship committee prior to rendering a decision.

What will the winner be awarded? The winner will be awarded a one-time scholarship in the amount of $1000.00 which will be presented at the GCC annual convention on November 9th (or mailed if the winner is unable to attend).
please share this with your friends/students who would be interested in submitting a video and who meet the above-mentioned attributes!  Good luck everyone!

Why should I give toward the scholarship fund? Dr Tim was our colleague, long time GCC member, recent Board Member and Legislative Chairperson, and our Chiropractic Brother. He was always a willing mentor to any chiropractic student who came his way; taking them under his wing, guiding and teaching them in the ways of Dr. Sid Williams and leading them on the path of principled chiropractic. In his honor and with his family's blessing, the Georgia Council of Chiropractic established the GCC Tim Langley Memorial Chiropractic Scholarship Fund. We commit to using this scholarship to continue helping students in a manner that would make Dr Tim proud.  All funds donated will go to chiropractic student scholarships. Please give as much as your heart leads you to give; our overall goal of $25,000 will establish the fund in perpetuity while our Fall 2019 goal of $5000 will add an additional award for 2019, both allowing Dr Tim's legacy to impact many generations of future chiropractors.

Feature Article...

Innate Based vs Subluxation Based

I am a straight Chiropractor; but I am not subluxation based. I never have been, and I don’t think you should be either.

Don’t get bent out of shape yet. I am not one of those DC’s that think that the subluxation is an antiquated idea, or that it is unscientific, and I certainly don’t think that we should take it out of our schools, our profession or our lexicon.

But it’s also not the right thing for us to be focused on. It’s not the thing that Chiropractic was founded on, nor is it the thing that is so unique to Chiropractic and has really differentiated us from the other healing arts.

And while so much of our profession has been arguing and fighting about whether we should keep the subluxation or not no one really noticed that we have almost completely lost what the real core of Chiropractic is and what Chiropractic was founded on.

I am not subluxation based, but I am Innate based.

The extent of power that the Innate Intelligence of the body has is something that is very unique to Chiropractic. There are certainly other healing disciplines that have a concept of some intangible part of the body; Chi in Chinese medicine and Ki in Reiki are probably the most discussed. But in any of the conversations I’ve had with those practitioners they never describe it as an Intelligence that makes decisions and choices about what is the best thing for the body to do in any particular situation. Instead it is more of an energy that a part of the body either does, or does not, have enough of.

The maximizing of the expression of this Innate Intelligence through the matter of the body is the core, fundamental concept that necessitates the Chiropractic profession’s existence, not the subluxation. Who cares if a corpse has a pinched nerve, a misaligned or fixated bone, a bone rubbing on or stretching a nerve or completely strangling the brainstem? If there isn’t Innate Intelligence present the nerves and the bones are irrelevant.

Some may feel this is semantics, but the focus on the subluxation and loss of the priority on the Innate Intelligence of the body is how we got into the position of having to defend the subluxation in the first place. When Innate was the focus of Chiropractic the subluxation concept was automatic; however, when we let Innate slip into a theory taught in Chiropractic schools as part of our history, but not part of a clinician’s thought process then the focus turned almost exclusively to the musculoskeletal system and the adjustment’s effects on it. When Innate was at the forefront of Chiropractic thinking Chiropractic was a system for saving lives. However, when Innate started to become an historical artifact, our focus as a profession has receded to being a not-so-bad, maybe-kind-of-sort-of, occasionally helpful option to try for back pain while, of course, also using all of the really effective evidence-based options such as anti-inflammatories, steroids, cold laser and the sort.

I feel there is also a contradiction in putting the attention on the subluxation and not Innate. We critique medicine all of the time for studying and concentrating on disease and death while we study and contrate on the source of life and health, but then become subluxation-based. Isn’t the subluxation our version of “sickness”? Why focus on the Chiropractic version of sickness instead of on the Chiropractic version of health, optimal expression of Innate Intelligence through matter? The 33 Principles were not put in random order, they are arranged and organized in the order of priority of importance. Innate Intelligence is introduced in Principle 20 but the subluxation is not introduced until Principle 31.

I understand, you are saying “But Subluxation-based only means that we focus only on correcting subluxations and not on bringing down inflammation with lasers (I think that is what I’ve heard people say they use them for) or increasing range of motion with stretches and traction.” Remember the expression “Where your attention goes, energy flows.” How many times in a day or week, or even in a month are you talking to patients about the concept Innate, even if you don’t use that exact term? Now how many times a day are you talking to your patients about subluxation, or nerve pressure, or some other synonym? I’ve shadowed many people with big practices over the years; if you are seeing more patients than I am then I know I can learn something from spending a day in your office and I need to know what that is. But I cannot remember a single time that I heard the doctor talk to the patient about Innate or that their body is intelligent and that this particular symptom must have some benefit to it, even though we may not enjoy it or understand why it is being done.

I do talk to my patients about subluxation, and often. I also make a strong emphasis on the part about that subluxation interfering with the intelligence of their body’s ability to run the show right. Pointing out their subluxations is a part of our table talk so the subluxation does get talked about at nearly every visit.

I am also talking to my patients, and my staff members, many times throughout my patient education curriculum about what actually makes them alive, what our tonsils, adenoids and appendix do in our bodies and the incredible intelligence behind those strategies and how our highly educated doctors couldn’t even see any purpose for those organs at all for a very long time. We talk about what all of our cold symptoms are actually doing for us and how intelligent of a system that is and why it is so important to allow their body to express that intelligence if they want to get past the need for those symptoms as fast as possible. I am even getting them to realize what both of the purposes of pain are (letting you know that something is wrong and, more importantly, letting you know what not to do or what has to be done differently until healing has taken place) and how they are shooting themselves in the foot when they numb that pain, regardless of if they numb it with pills, TENS, steroid shots or even ice.

As important as it is to talk to our patients about Innate Intelligence the ones that we really have to be talking to about it is each other and even more importantly, Chiropractic students. 25 years ago I matriculated to Logan, fairly far over to the ‘Mixer’ end of the spectrum and fortunately we had an instructor that taught Chiropractic Philosophy from the straight perspective. He did teach us about Innate Intelligence. I can’t remember very much of what he taught this far removed, but it must have been convincing enough to keep me thinking about it 4 years later and debating classmates about it all the way through Logan. But that was the only instructor to reference Innate without ridiculing it. I ask my associate doctors and other colleagues that I will mentor the same series of questions that I ask patients to get them to see the concept of Innate Intelligence and how it impacts their health. The doctors take, on average, 75% longer to come to an answer that in some way resembles Innate Intelligence (Spirit, Soul, Lifeforce, etc.) than patients do.

When I ask them how, as a chiropractor, did they not come up with the answer right away they always say that they didn’t think it could be that, it couldn’t be that simple or that obvious. But isn’t that the whole point? Isn’t the beauty that it is so simple? That it is so obvious? But because it has become this nearly forgotten about concept in our profession it isn’t obvious to many anymore.

It’s not too late to turn that ship around. Talk about the magic of, the beauty of, Innate Intelligence, and if you’re comfortable with it, and with who you are talking to, talk about where that Intelligence must come from. When a patient tells you about a symptom they are experiencing ask yourself why Innate would be doing that right now? What is the advantage to this particular experience for them? That has helped me to decide what is the best thing to do for this patient so many times over the years and helped me to get the patient to trust in their body and not medicate every symptom they ever experience. And whenever someone wants to sell me some new gadget or supplement it gets very clear very fast what does and what does not belong in my practice.

Talk about Innate to each other and if you have the good fortune to work with and shape the minds of students in any way never shut up about Innate Intelligence. Maybe if the teachers hear the students talking about it more and more the teachers will feel safe to talk about it to them too and Innate can go back to the forefront our professions consciousness and decision making.

If we can make that happen the subluxation will save itself and we won’t have to fight for it anymore.

With Care,

Steve Ranicki, Innate-Based ChiropracTOR
