President's Message
CERTAINTY IN AN UNCERTAIN TIME!
Many have predicted a doom and gloom picture for the future of chiropractic. As insurance moves further toward higher deductibles and higher copays, the utilization of chiropractic is in further jeopardy. The future has uncertainty written all over it. However with all this uncertainty, and threats toward chiropractic, there is one thing we are all of certain of:
Correcting subluxations improves functionality
and expression in our patients.
There are so many times I've been asked by patients, how did chiropractic survive with so much false scrutiny over the years. My answer is always, because we get results! It is true on many levels that humanity improves because we choose to go to the office and serve our patients.
With such power and ability comes responsibility. As subluxation-based chiropractors, we must excel in the type of care we provide for our patients, as they deserve only the best.
The Georgia Council of Chiropractic is mindful of helping our members be the best at their profession. Therefore the Education we offer is heavily vetted to make sure it will help you become better at location, analysis and correction of Subluxations. The best example is our upcoming convention August 29-30 at the Atlanta Marriott Northwest, which highlights leaders in our profession with the goal of you being a better chiropractor!
We also have a very special political guest that will be joining us at this GCC convention. During our last legislative session, one of the main voices was Representative Sharon Cooper. Ms Cooper is the chairperson for the Georgia Health and Human Services. Her position makes her one of the most important people in Georgia politics, from a chiropractor's viewpoint. Many believe, however that she was very negative against chiropractic in the last legislative session.
Thanks to the efforts of the GCC'S political action committee, Chiropractors in Politics, we were able to meet with Rep Cooper recently. The conversation with Rep. Cooper was surprisingly revealing and she would like to come before us and share her position, one that is quite different than initially expected.
I am very excited for this monumental legislative luncheon. I look forward to you being there on Sunday afternoon, and I also appreciate you standing beside us as a member of the GCC as we move chiropractic into its righteous future!
Awais Butt, D.C.

Convention Speaker Preview
Seeking Clarity: Delivering outcomes-based care
by David Fletcher, DC, FRCCSS(C)
Chairman CLA, Chief Clinical Officer
If you were to wander through the halls of a chiropractic college and attend seminars or listen in on a webinar, you would be struck by the enthusiasm and the certainty of the students and practitioners. Not quite bravado, but a certain confidence that goes with being called by purpose. However, if you were to step away from this environment and watch the same chiropractors in their community practices, you might see a different picture. The confidence seems to weaken and the uniqueness of the chiropractic story begins to shift. The boldness of innate healing gets softened to become something pedestrian that can be duplicated by any number of other qualified health providers. What could cause this evaporation into mediocrity?
The answer lies in quantifiable outcomes. As practitioners, we have all felt and seen the power of an adjustment as it arouses a response that only an adjustment can do. There is nothing quite like observing the shift as a person unlocks years of confusing tension from the spine and nervous system. Being a part of the transformation of a patient’s health and their wellness belief systems is the “juice” that keeps us engaged. But, as powerful as that event can be, the real healing and transformation comes when there is a commitment to progressive change. Keeping the patient, and indeed the practitioner, engaged and focused on the real outcome is an enormous undertaking. This of course means that there must be a crystal clear understanding and plan as to what that outcome could and should be. Sadly, because the illusion of wellness is so far reaching and nebulous, that message is difficult to attain. On the other side of the equation, functional and structural improvements are imminently measurable as are pain and symptom outcomes. But these outcomes leave so much on the table for a chiropractor. Having an improved spinal or peripheral joint system is only a small component in the wellness continuum. What’s needed is a unified approach where structure, function, and continuous adaptability are gathered together and a quantifiable measurement can be attained to benchmark where and how a patient is positioned in their wellness.
